The Things I Learned About Culture

First of all, I was surprised about culture. Because, I know what is culture vaguely. I have only watched on TV or books, or people. That alone gave me information about culture. I looked over culture of France. There are many things that I didn’t know. I was exited. There is a lot of food. For example, quiche is looks tart with a lot of cheese into pie dough. It is very appetizing. A croissant is good. There are many buildings. Triumphal Arch is very beautiful in Paris. The Versailles Palace is great with so large and beautiful garden. There are many arts. Louvre Museum is one of largest museum in the world. Rodin is thinking. There are many things that look interesting. It is fun! I want to visit France. The things made in France are known by people all over the world. For example, there is cheese, wine, fashion brands, buildings, pictures, sculpture, and so on. Wine is loved all over the world. And cheese is eaten all over the world. The Eiffel Tower is crowed with visitors. I want to watch around Paris on the top of the Eiffel Tower.

There are a lot of interesting things about French culture. First, French cuisine is famous in the world. There are many French restaurants all over the world. Cheese fondue in Savoie is famous as local food. Above all, French wine is known in the world. For example, there is Bordeaux, Bourgogne and so on. The French drink wine with lunch and dinner, both adults to children. France is famous country as cheese producing area. For example, there are Camembert, Brie, Mimolette, Roquefort and so on. The French eat cheese with breakfast, lunch, as a snack, and dinner. French culture is not only food. France is a center place of fashion. Many brands are loved all over the world. There are Hermès, Louis Vuitton and so on. Paris is a dream of the fashion models. There is traditional culture in France. That is a theater. Grand Guignol is a play that existed between the late of 19th and the middle of 20th century. The performance with horror theme went off very well with a lot of audience in a dead faint. Grand Guignol word is used as adjectival phrase means bloody or absurdity in France. Quatorze Juillet is a festival in France. This festival is held in July 14. Quatorze Juillet means July 14. People shoot off fireworks all over France. This date is the celebration of the France Revolution. There is an association called most beautiful village in France. This association has the purpose of saving small villages with a legacy. For example, there is Hunspach, in the east of France Guillotine is invented by Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotin in France in 1792. Guillotine is a scaffold. People is removed a pain with execution for Guillotine.

French Art

Painting
There are many paintings in France. Above all, oil painting is famous. French paintings have various styles with the period. For example, some styles are Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, Surrealism and so on.

Rococo style is characterized by brilliant colors and beautiful curves. Rococo style was popular in the 18th century. Madame de Pompadour (1755, Louvre) is famous portrait in the Rococo era. This picture was painted by Maurice Quentin de La Tour.
Neoclassicism was popular in the 19th century. Dominique Ingres is a typical painter in Neoclassicism. For example, Grande Odalisque is a famous picture (1814, Louvre) and was painted by Ingres.









Impressionism was born in the late of 19th century. The reason is that there was no more worth in painting, because of the appearance of the camera. Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) is a typical painter of Impressionism. For example, Woman with a Parasol (1875), Bridge over a Pool of Water Lilies (1899, Metropolitan Museum of Art). Japonism (an interest in Europe in all things Japanese)had a major impact on his style.

Sculpture
Auguste Rodin was a famous sculptor in France in the 19th century. He made many famous sculptures, for example, the Thinker, The Burghers of Calais, and The Gates of Hell.



Cinema
Cannes Film Festival is held in Cannes in May every year. It is the most authoritative international film festival in the world. The top prize is called “Palme d'Or”. It is selected from about 20 films. Two famous movies that received this award are The Pianist in 2002 by Roman Polanski and Glory to the Filmmaker! by Beat Takeshi in 2007.

Georges de La Tour (1593 to 1652) - La Tour is a painter in Lorraine of 17th century. He had painted “The cheat with the ace of diamonds”, “St Joseph (1642, Louvre)”.



- Rococo style (18th century) –
Antoine Watteau (1684 - 1721)

Cannes Film Festival – It is held in Cannes in May every year. It is most authoritative international film festival in the world. Highest prize is called “Palme d'Or”. Highest prize is selected into about 20 films. ”The Class(Laurent Cantet, France)”is selected in 2008.
