French Art

Picture

- the Middle Ages-
Georges de La Tour (1593 to 1652) - La Tour is a painter in Lorraine of 17th century. He had painted “The cheat with the ace of diamonds”, “St Joseph (1642, Louvre)”.



- Rococo style (18th century) –
Antoine Watteau (1684 - 1721)
“Madame de Pompadour(1755,Louvre)” is famous portrait of Rococo era. This picture was painted by Maurice Quentin de La Tour.



- Neoclassicism -
Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780 - 1867)” Grande Odalisque (1814, Louvre)”



Jacques-Louis David(1784 - 1825) – David had painted famous picture what is ” Napoleon Crossing the St. Bernard Pass”. His picture had printing textbook of history in Japanese School.



- Impressionism -
Claude Monet(1840 - 1926) – Monet is typical painter of impressionists. For example,”Impression, soleil levant (1872)”, ”Seerosenteich(1908)”






Sculpture
Auguste Rodin – Rodin is typical sculptor in France of 19th century. For example, the thinker, The Burghers of Calais, The Gates of Hell. The Thinker is “kangaeru hito” in Japanese.







Cinema
Cannes Film Festival – It is held in Cannes in May every year. It is most authoritative international film festival in the world. Highest prize is called “Palme d'Or”. Highest prize is selected into about 20 films. ”The Class(Laurent Cantet, France)”is selected in 2008.
